What's that rumble?

It's the San Francisco Litquake!

What began as a one day fest in 1999, Litquake has grown tremendously in the past 12 years to include youth programs, classroom visits, and of course, the Lit Crawl (did you know that San Franciscans spend twice the national average on books and booze??? The Lit Crawl is a happy mix of the two). 

 This year they've been going strong for the past week, here are a few of our picks from their schedule! (You can view the entire schedule here) 

Lit Flicks: Screening of Doc

Doc is an unorthadox portrait of the life and times of the Paris Review founder and counter culture figure  H.L. "Doc" Humes. Directed by Humes' daughter, Immy Humes, the film takes a look into Doc's world - an MIT student at age 16 who founded the Review, wrote two acclaimed political novels about war, and then disappeared after becoming paranoid and mentally ill in the 1960s. He then bounced back as the "Original Hippie Philosopher King".

The cast includes Doc’s family and friends—writers George Plimpton, Norman Mailer, Peter Matthiessen, William Styron, and Paul Auster; avant-garde filmmaker Jonas Mekas; and the Pied Piper of LSD, Timothy Leary. 

Learn about this important figure behind the Paris Review, which was founded “by writers, for writers, with an emphasis on the act of writing itself."! Bonus - if you haven't been to Oddball Film+Video before you are in for a treat! It's a zany place (in a perfectly good way) and nothing beats the sound of old projectors!

You'll find yourself on well-traveled roads and in secret crevices hidden in plain sight. You will be guided by local curators, editors, composers, authors, journalists, performers, designers, and artist who use original works of literary fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, visual art, sound, and music to guide you.

Their newest tour, "Everywhere Man" debuts at Litquake and invites you to solve a modern mystery while riding the city's historic cable cars.  Participants meet at the cable car turnaround at Powell Street at 2 pm, pick up a pick up a limited-edition book and map, and take the tour!
